The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), the largest public housing authority in North America, was established in 1935 to provide safe, affordable housing for low- and moderate-income New Yorkers. Today, NYCHA serves over 528,000 residents, nearly 1 in 17 New Yorkers, across 335 public housing and PACT developments, as well as through Section 8 programs.

NYCHA’s Department of Voter Engagement oversees all resident voting processes at NYCHA, including resident association elections and modernization votes. As part of the 2022 state legislation that established the New York City Public Housing Preservation Trust, a housing facility can convert to the Trust only after an affirmative resident vote.
